Allentown -- given Billy Joel's immortal take on how "they're closing all the factories down" -- provides plenty of shopping to help fill in idle gaps. That goes for the entire Lehigh Valley including Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, with antiques markets, specialty shops, farmers markets and malls. Allentown's La Belle Cuisine - Fine Cookware, on south 9th Street, stocks imported and domestic wares and difficult-to-find classic tools. Josh Early Candies, on Tilghman Street, uses early 1900s recipes for chocolates, mints, brittles, and toffees. Engler's Train Depot on Emmaus Avenue, repairs N Gauge to G Gauge trains, and stocks models, tools, and parts. Allentown Antique Reproductions has a downtown showroom for furnishings, whereas Allenwood Americana Antiques specializes in WWI and WWII memorabilia, and Apple and Eve Antiques carries an assortment of treasures.

Wild Bird Center at he Village West Shopping Center carries seed, suet, feeders, hardware and more. Whitehall's Lehigh Valley Mall, anchored by Macy's, Strawbridges, and JCPenney, has more than 130 stores. Bethlehem's Westgate Mall, anchored by Bon-Ton and Bon-Ton Furniture, has dozens of retail shops including Kay Jewelers and King's Supermarket. At 17th and Chew street, the Allentown Fairground Farmers Market -- billing itself as the "most modern old-fashioned market in the east" -- has some 65 vendors selling meat, poultry, produce, and baked goods. The Crossings Premium Outlets features 130 stores including Banana Republic, Max Azria, and Waterford Wedgwood. Opening in October, 2006: The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley, with lots of shops and more including L.L. Bean, and a Rave movie theater.
